- FELLOWSHIP FOR A CAUSE

Sad to say, so many of us who have lived in Japan for
years and years like nothing more than to leave, for shorter
or longer periods of time, and the feeling at departure is so
much more joyful than the feeling on reentry. Just as so many
people of the older generation came to Tokyo to work from the
countryside, never to really identify with the place or consider
it their home, we have come to Japan. And as just as these Tokyo
residents are not really ever here in their minds and souls--only
in their bodies which they may half experiences as corpses to
be revived only in periodic trips to the countryside--we are
in this country, sometimes for years and years and years. I really
believe the quality of life is so wretched for us here largely
for that reason. Where there is no identification with a community,
caring turns into craving, fellowship turns to isolation. In UMJ, at least, we are trying to enjoy each other and work to
achieve some element of community in the light of our common
cause, however limited our resources may be as individuals. This
can be done even if we live far apart. Participate, people, participate.
WAKE UP!, if possible even before you discover your body is half
a corpse. If you do, you will be one of the lucky ones. Join
the UMJ!
