Statement:

The number of
foreign nationals resident in Japan steadily increased
throughout the 1980s. In 1993 the number registered in
accordance with the alien registration law reached
1,320,748. International marriages between Japanese and
non-Japanese spouses also increased between 1970 and
1990.
United for a multicultural
Japan
was established to bring together these
individuals, spouses, and families of international
members in to focus on three main areas:
1.
UMJ is committed
to uniting to promote and defend the rights of foreign
nationals in Japan. Our efforts involve educating the
Japanese government about our needs and making
recommendations as to how to improve the situation
occupied by foreign residents. Projects include the
advocation of voting rights for permanent residents,
legal rights of foreign spouses and long-term residents,
as well as basic human rights of individual people, UMJ
members, and the community as a whole.
2.
UMJ was
established to allow members to exchange support,
information, and cooperation for mutal professional and
personal benefit. Through this exchange members will be
able to actively utilize and contribute to the business
environment in Japan. Through the sharing of
experiences, members will be able to take advantage of
information gained from several people, thereby
increasing their opportunities for gaining satisfying
occupations.
3.
UMJ will provide
a community and network of social contacts for those in
the international community. Families consisting of
international members will be able to find others in
similar situations and cultural and linguistic variety
within the family unit will be acknowledged as an
advantage. The communication and support available will
assist people in accomplishing various processes
necessary in daily life.
UMJ
was established to provide a forum for foreign
spouses of Japanese and permanent residents who share
many common experiences and to unite our efforts in
improving the living environment for the international
community and society as a whole.
